Expecting, Scene #01
Despite never being able to conceive, Lenny and Martha (Seth Gamble and Charlie Forde) are a happy married couple. As a result, they made the decision to ask Sandra (Sophia Burns), a surrogate mother who would bring their child to term, for assistance. When the time comes for them to finally meet their new family member, they can hardly contain their excitement as they decorate and fan the living room. But they are shocked to see Sandra has come empty-handed when she knocks on their door. But when Sandra tells them she's changed her mind, their surprise becomes shock. There is nothing Lenny and Martha can do to convince her to change her mind; she has made the decision to keep their children for herself. At the news, Martha sobs, distraught and in a panic. How could Sandra ruin their lives in this way after all this waiting, all this work, and all of their support? Lenny adopts a more direct strategy, trying to reason with Sandra by presenting her with a variety of options. But Sandra is unmoving, regardless of what Lenny proposes. In actuality, she is unable to have her dream of having her own family fulfilled by Lenny and Martha. But as soon as Lenny hears this, he starts to formulate an idea. Maybe... he and Martha COULD start a family with Sandra. Sandra receives a startling and unconventional proposition from Lenny. Why doesn't she move in with them and stay? She would never have to part from the child since she could join their family. She would be involved in its life forever. Though fascinated, Sandra is concerned that this proposition is only partially realized. In this radical new household arrangement that Lenny and Martha are proposing, will she ever really be on an equal footing? Or will she just turn into an opulent housekeeper?
